PAMM is Miami's flagship contemporary art museum — opened in 2013 in a striking Herzog & de Meuron building right on Biscayne Bay (same architects as Tate Modern and Beijing's Bird's Nest stadium). The building itself is famous: raised on stilts to handle storm surge, with hanging gardens of native Florida plants cascading from the wide canopy. The architecture alone is worth the visit.

The collection focuses on art of the Americas from the 20th and 21st centuries, with particularly strong Latin American and Caribbean holdings — a deliberate counterpoint to the European/US bias of most contemporary art institutions. Rotating exhibitions are the headline; recent shows have featured Beatriz González, Adrian Piper, and large group surveys of Cuban, Brazilian, and Mexican contemporary art.

Plan 90 minutes to 2 hours. The museum is small enough to see thoroughly in one visit. The bayside terrace café is one of the prettiest places in Miami for a coffee. Combo tickets with Frost Science (next door) are worth it if you'd do both anyway. First Thursday of the month is free admission, 4-9pm — but it gets crowded.
